Scrubs

Scrubs is a popular sitcom that airs on NBC. Until January of this year, I never really watched it - I guess I didn't really think that it was any good. However, when my siblings were here, they wanted to watch it and so I saw a couple of episodes. I think that it took all of about 3 minutes for me to be hooked. I started watching episodes on TV, but realised that it wasn't enough. So when I received some gift certificates for BestBuy (as part of their rewards program), I decided to buy at least the first season on DVD to see how it was.






So here we are a couple of months later, and I have the first four seasons on DVD - which is all that is currently available. This show is phenomenal!! The writer/creator is Bill Lawrence, who was one of the co-creators of Spin City - another classic comedy series. The cast is amazing, and the dialogue - to paraphrase Janice from Friends - "Oh my god!!!"





Here are the main characters:



Dr John Dorian - known as JD, Newbie or any girls name - played by Zach Braff. He plays an insecure, geeky, but mostly straightforward dreamer, who seems to unwittingly sabotage his own relationships, except with ->













Dr Chris Turk - known as Turk, Turkleton, Gandhi or Brown Bear, a surgeon and JD's best friend - played by Donald Faison. They've been friends for years, and Turk brings the coolness to JD and Turk's relationship. and were room mates - at least until the end of Season 4, because JD moves out to help Turk's marriage to ->







Nurse Carla Turk (nee Espinosa) - played by Judy Reyes. Carla is the love of Turk's life, and a good friend to JD, even if she can be a little opinionated at times. She sometimes feels that JD is Turk's other wife, because of the way that they are together. Before she dated Turk, she actually dated ->







Dr Perry Cox - known as Cox, Perry, Per - played by John C McGinley. Dr Cox is JD's mentor (although he won't admit it), and he keeps an eye out for Newbie, as he keeps calling JD. Oh, and he also calls JD different girls names because he feels that JD is very emotional and acts like a girl a lot. Dr Cox actually does care about what JD does, and tries he best to make him a better doctor, but uses tough love to do it - which only makes for better viewing!! Dr Cox is divorced from ->




Jordan - played by Christa Miller, who you might remember from the Drew Carey show. She's married to Bill Lawrence, which must have helped her get this role, which I must admit, she plays to perfection. She slept with JD after he showed some backbone, but didn't tell Dr Cox until it would cause the most damage. She does have her soft side though, and you see it every now and then. Even though she is divorced from Perry, the do live together, and have a son, Jack. Jordan is on the Board of Directors of Sacred Heart Hospital (where this is set), whose Chief of Internal Medicine is ->



Dr Bob Kelso - also known as Bobbo, Kelso, or the devil, played by Ken Jenkins. Kelso is a complex character - he treats everyone like crap, but does have his moments. He can say stuff like "What has two thumbs and doesn't give a crap? Bob Kelso" (giving himself two thumbs up). In another episode, you can see him order the hospital not to kick out a patient with no insurance after he talks to the man's son who wandered into his office. The person he picks on the most is ->






Ted Buckland - played by Sam Lloyd. Ted is the hospital attorney, and he hates Kelso with a vengeance, mostly because of the way that Kelso treats him. Ted has no backbone, but he does have an acapella group who actually sound quite nice. He looks after all legal matters concerning the hospital. The staff include ->







The Janitor - played by Neil Flynn. The Janitor is another bully, but he seems to focus on certain people. He enjoys tormenting JD, locks horns with Cox and Kelso, and is scared of Carla. The only one that he likes is someone that he calls Blond Doctor, who treats him like a human being. Who is Blond Doctor? Why she is ->





Dr Eliot Reid - known as Blond Doctor, Eliot, Barbie - played by Sarah Chalke, who you might remember from Roseanne (she played Becky). She is neurotic, full of quirks, highly strung, but at the same time, beautiful, sexy, smart, and a damn good doctor! She and JD are good friends, and have been more than that one certain occassions. Her lack of confidence is her biggest problem, but I think that she is someone who I can really relate to. Since she is attractive, there are many men after her, but the biggest womaniser there is obviously ->






The Todd - played by Robert Maschio. How can I explain this character. He is only interested in one thing - and that is having sex with women. Everything is a double entendre to him, but he is also one of the dumbest people at this hospital. He also displays signs of closet homosexuality, which does raise an eyebrow here or there.





Other than the great writing, the superb cast, and the great stories (a lot of them will actually hit you harder than you realise), there is one big reason why I like this show. That's the friendship between JD and Turk.
As a matter of fact, in one of the more recent episodes, they sing a song called "It's guy love", and here it is!!!
